NIT Delhi is one of the 10 new NITs setup by Govt. of India during the 11th Five Year Plan. It has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by an act of Parliament of India. It aims to provide for Instruction and Research in Branches of Engineering, Technology, Management, Education, Science and Arts and for advancement of Learning and dissemination of knowledge in such branches. It is a fully funded Government Institute under the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.
NIT Delhi started admitting students from the academic session 2010-11 with an intake of 30 students in each of the following branches of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes:
- Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Electrical & Electronics Engineering
- Computer Science & Engineering
Since inception of NIT Delhi, for the first two years the academic activities were carried out at NIT Warangal, the mentor institute for NIT Delhi. From the academic year 2012-2013, Govt.of Delhi has provided temporary space at Integrated Institute of Technology,Sector-9, Dwarka ,Delhi. NIT Delhi started its operations at the temporary site with effect from June 2012. It is likely to continue its activities at Dwarka till its permanent building comes up at an identified site in Delhi in next 2-3 years.
From academic year 2013-2014 NIT Delhi has started masters programme (M.Tech) in Electronics & Communication Engineering. In near future NIT Delhi plans to offer more disciplines of studies and to offer Doctoral programmes in all disciplines of interest to the institute.
