ABOUT THE LIBRARY

Brief Introduction of Central Library

The Central Library acts as the primary information resource centre and the repository of various printed as well as electronic resources that supports teaching, research and all the academic activities of the Institute. The library was established in the year 2012 (June 2012) in Dwarka to facilitate the access to information resources to faculty and students of the Institute. It moved to the NILERD Campus, Narela on 18th February 2014 and recently, it moved to Permanent Campus in February, 2022 from NILERD Campus, Narela. All the faculty members, students and staff of the Institute are entitled to access all the library facilities and services. The Central Library have a rich collection of Books in the area of Science & Technology including Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, and Management, Civil Engineering etc. Also, apart from this, the Library has reference collection including dictionaries, handbooks, and research related books. The Library also holds a good collection for general reading purpose including books on sports & yoga, novels, fictions, books for competitive exams like GATE/IES, magazines on general awareness, current affairs, and specialized subject magazines like Auto Car, Digit, and Electronics for you etc. The Central Library follows ‘Open Access System’ along with Self Check-in/Check-out facility. The separate sections are arranged for the books under Text Books, Book Bank and Reference category for easy access to the users.

The Central Library have a rich collection of books on science & technology including Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, and Management etc. Also, apart from this, the Library has reference collection including dictionaries, handbooks, and research related books. The Library also holds a good collection for general reading purpose including books on sports & yoga, novels, fictions, books for competitive exams like GATE/IES, magazines on general awareness, current affairs, and specialized subject magazines like Autocar, Digit, and Electronics for you etc.

General Conduct and Motto of the Library

The main objective of the Central Library is to support the all the research and educational activities of the Institute. It involves content development, acquisition, technical services, providing Institutional repositories and inter-library loan, etc. Our motto is to provide polite, friendly and efficient services without any discrimination among the users.

Books

Presently, the library holds a collection of approx.18000 printed books (including Book Bank collection/Gifted/Donated/Gratis books) till date. The collection includes a wide range of subjects, covering the academic requirements of the Institute’s courses and providing valuable general reference resources.

The library has a collection on all major subject areas of Engineering, Science & Technology like Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical & Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Management and English/Professional Communication including Rajbhasha Hindi collection.  Also, we have reference sources like Subject Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Dictionaries, guides for gaining basic knowledge in the field of Science & Technology.

MEMBERSHIP FACILITY

Institute ID cum Library Card

All students (B.Tech/M.Tech/PhD), faculty members, and Non-faculty (Regular & Contractual) of the Institute are eligible for membership in the Institute Library. The Central Library issues an Institute ID cum Library Card to newly enrolled students. To obtain this RFID Card, students must submit an application form, which is available on the Institute’s website.

Book Bank Facility

The Book Bank Facility is provided to all the B.Tech/M.Tech during beginning of each semester for whole semester. The priority is given to SC/ST category students at the time of circulation of Book Bank. The following are the member privileges for the circulation of Book Bank:-

ICT Infrastructure & Library Management System

  • The Library is connected to the campus LAN and Wi-Fi facility. The library server works under Windows 8 environment.
  • The Library uses Web Centric LIBSYS 10 software along with LS Remote solution on Cloud package which is an integrated multi-user library automation management system that supports all in-house activities of the library.
  • The Library have RFID (Radio Frequency Identifier) based Automation system and Circulation system (self Check-in/Check-out).
  • The database of the entire library acquisitions is being updated on regular basis along with details of recently acquired books.
  • The library has Web OPAC facility under which all the bibliographic details of the library collection can be accessed from Internet 24×7 on all week days by the users
  • The EAS/RFID Security Gates are installed at the library entrance to prevent Library resources from theft activities.
  • The RFID smart cards (i.e. Institute ID cum Library Card) are also provided to all the students & faculty/staff members for the Institute.
  • The library uses RFID Portable Handheld reader for easy and quick physical verification of library Books, for locating missing books and security check of checked out items etc.
Renewal & Reservation

Renewal Facility: – One time Renewal facility is provided to all the Library members (except faculty members) on or before the due date of the Book(s).

Book Reservation Facility:- A user can avail ‘Book Reservation Facility’ when all copies of a title are checked out (i.e. not available on shelf) from the library. A user can easily reserve a book through library WebOPAC by himself/herself or requesting to the library staff.

Email Alert Services

The various Email alerts (like check-in/check-out/renewal/reserve/book overdue etc.) are sent to Library Members on regular basis to keep the user aware about the Library activities. Apart from this, the library also sends various updates/notices/circulars etc. to the Library members through official email of the library to keep the users updated about the library activities.

Book Recommendation Policy

The Book Recommendation facility is provided to all the faculty members as well as staff members of the Institute. The faculties can recommend the Books as per the book recommendation policy of the Library. The book(s) should be recommended in the book(s) recommendation form of the Library along with the complete bibliographical details of the book(s) which may be forwarded through the HoD of the concerned department.

All the members of the library should strictly follow the following points while recommending Book(s) to the Library.

General Text Books/Reference Books
  • The maximum 5 copies of any Text book/2 copies of any other book (i.e. Reference book etc.) costing below or upto Rs. 1000/- can be recommended.
  • The maximum 3 copies of any Text book/2 copies of any other book (i.e. Reference book etc.) costing below or upto Rs. 3000/- can be recommended.
  • The maximum 1 copy of any Text book/any other book (i.e. Reference book etc.) costing Rs. 3000/- or above can be recommended.
  • The Abstract should be attached with the Recommendation Form if any book costing upto Rs. 5000/- or above is recommended by the faculty/staff/or any other member of the library.
Book Bank Facility

The multiple copies of the Text book (as per requirement)/Reference book (max. 05 copies) can be recommended in case of development of Book Bank for the students as per the prescribed syllabus (i.e. approved by Senate).

CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICES

Newspaper Clippings Service: The Central Library has initiated the ‘Weekly Newspaper Clippings Service’ (initially Bi-Monthly Newspaper Clipping Service) from 1st March 2019 onwards. The ‘Newspaper Clipping Service’ covers articles, editorial and reviews published in daily newspapers (both Hindi & English) which are subscribed by the Central Library. This ‘Current Awareness Service’ will cover the current topics/news related to the field of Science & Technology. The purpose of the service is to keep the users updated with the latest developments, updates and advancements in the area of Science & Technology. The below clippings of the news are covered from the leading Indian newspapers like The Times of India, The Economic Times, Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Dainik Jagran,  Jansatta etc. This service is provided through email to all the Students & Staff members of the Institute.

Current Arrivals: In current arrivals service the Library users are informed about the recent additions to the Library (i.e. books/newspapers/journals etc.) through Email/Notices.

Employment Information: The Central Library also keeps its users updated with the latest job opportunities in the field of Science & Technology. There is a separate column for ‘Job Opportunities’ in the Weekly Newspapers Clippings Service which covers latest jobs notification in various disciplines.

Training/Orientation Programmes

The Central Library organizes Training/Orientation Programmes on time to time basis for all the library users. Every year, an orientation programme is organized for all the newly enrolled students (B.Tech/M.Tech) students under which the users are informed with various library services & facilities provided by the library. Also, the hands on training are also provided to the library users on regular basis (as and when required by the users).

E-Library Services & Facilities:

A. Access to All the E-Resources

i. INFED Platform (https://idp.nitdelhi.ac.in/): Central Library has setup INFED (INFLIBNET Access Management Federation) platform of eShodhSindhu in the Institute during the year 2020. The INFED platform provides access to all the subscribed E-resources of the Institute from anywhere anytime via remote Login Facility. All the Research Students & Faculty Members have been successfully registered in INFED platform and the platform has benefited the entire research community of the Institute during Covid-19 Lockdown situation. ii. NPTEL Videos (https://nptel.ac.in/): he Library provides access to NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) Video to the various users of Library which provides E-learning through online Web and Video courses in Engineering, Science and humanities streams. It aims to enhance the quality of engineering education in India by providing free online courseware. NPTEL is funded by the Ministry of Human of Education. iii. National Digital Library of India (https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in/). All the students and faculty/staff members have been registered in the NDLI portal (project under Ministry of Education). NDLI provides access to around 56,053,815 E-resources including lecture videos and notes of NPTEL/SWAYAM courses, presentations used by faculties in classes, online class lectures, questions/solutions of common subjects for students of all engineering discipline.

iv. Shodhganga Platform (https://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/handle/10603/268404): As per MoU with INFLIBNET, the Central Library has uploaded all the Ph.D. thesis of the Research scholars in the Shodhganga (A reservoir of Indian Thesis) Platform so that it may be available to the entire research/scholarly community in the open access. E. Access to Previous Years Question Papers

i. Database of Previous Year Question Papers: The Library has created a database for previous year question papers of NIT Delhi in LIBSYS Software (Library Management Software). Thus, the Library Members can easily access the previous year question papers of NIT Delhi through the Library WebOPAC. The users can easily download the PDF for the question paper for their reference. The bibliographical details like name of subject, course code, semester, year, branch etc. is available so that the users can easily retrieve and search the question papers in WebOPAC.

ii. Google Drive of Previous Year Question Papers:– Central Library has created a Google Drive of previous year question papers of NIT Delhi so that the students may access the question papers for reference from anywhere/anytime.

GENERAL RULES

  • All library users must sign In/Out register available with the attendant at the main gate of the Library.
  • While entering the library, user should leave his/her personal belongings such as bags, personal books etc. at the property counter reserved for this purpose. Loose papers and notebooks may however be taken into the library. Users leaving the library should permit the library staff to examine their personal belongings (if asked). The users are advised not to leave any valuable/expensive items at the property counter.
  • Library is not responsible for any loss of personal belongings. All files, books and notebooks must be presented to the security guard at the checkpoint for inspection while leaving the Library. Library does not permit any exception in the observance of this rule.
  • All the users will enter in the library with their Identity Card.
  • The Readers shall keep silence within the library premises.
  • Use of cellular phones or any other audio/video device is strictly prohibited in the Library premises. If readers wish to keep them while using the Library, they must be switched off or in silent mode.
  • Smoking, eating, drinking, sleeping and talking loudly are strictly prohibited in the Library.
  • Reference Books/Magazines are strictly prohibited outside the library.
  • If any student is found indulging in book hiding, stealing or mutilating, disciplinary action will be taken against him/her.
  • The member would satisfy himself/herself before leaving the issue counter as to whether the book is in good condition or not otherwise he may be held responsible.
  • Books/Documents taken out of the shelves must be left on the table. Replacing the documents on shelves by users is not encouraged as the documents may get misplaced.
  • Do not spend more than half an hour to locate the documents. If you experience any difficulty in locating the required material, Please contact the Library Staff/librarian.
  • Readers should not mark, underline, write, or tear pages or otherwise damage the library documents including books/magazines/journals etc.
  • Students are advised not to issue Books to others on their names.
  • No photograph of the Library shall be taken without the prior permission of the Librarian.
  • Library reserves the right to call back any issued book/item at any time.
  • Violation of library rules or misconduct by a member may invite discontinuation of the library privileges.
  • The Librarian, with the approval of the competent authority reserves the right to add, delete, or modify any of these rules as and when required.
  • Contact the staff on duty/section staff for any queries.
  • Keep the Library premises tidy.
  • Suggestions on all aspects of library services are welcome.

Book Lending Rules

  • Books can be issued only against RFID-Card issued by the Central Library of the Institute to the borrowers. The RFID-Card is non-transferable and its loss should be immediately reported to the library.
  • Books issued will not be accepted back on the same day.
  • The Library member is responsible for any book issued against his/her RFID card, as per the library record.
  • No borrowing facility is available to the visitors. Visitor  or  guest  member from  academic  or  research  institute is allowed to  use  the  library for  a short period of time (for Reference only) with the prior permission from the Competent authority/Librarian. The Guest member is required to produce proof of identification.
  • The borrower should check the fitness of the document before getting it issued. Any discrepancy should be brought to the notice of the library staff at the Circulation Counter who will put necessary remarks on the document before issuing. The borrower will be held responsible for any defect/damage found at the time of return of the document, if not recorded on it earlier, and will be liable to pay the penalty as decided by the competent authority/Librarian.
  • The readers should check the book thoroughly for missing pages, chapters, pictures etc., while borrowing the book.
  • A borrower is responsible for the safe custody and return of the documents borrowed from the Library. Sending reminders to defaulters is not obligatory on the part of the Library.
  • Any document issued may be recalled by the Library before the due date of return without assigning any reason and the borrower has to abide by the decision.
  • The borrowers are advised to return the documents while proceeding on long leave.
  • Books issued should not be brought to the library except for check-in or renewal.
  • All the students who want to return the books issued on their names are advised to wait until the books are shown as cancelled against their names.
  • Faculty and staff going on long leave, deputation, study leave, or extraordinary leave will have to return all borrowed materials before leaving the Institute.
  • Students need to clear all their Library Dues at the end of each Semester before leaving the Institute for the Summer/Winter vacations.
  • All books need to be returned for physical verification irrespective of the date of issue and category of users. Dates for physical verification will be announced 1-2 weeks in advance.
  • Members are held responsible for all items issued on their name, until they are returned to the library.


Reference Collection Rules

  • General Text books are issued to all eligible members as per their entitlements.
  • Documents, belonging to ‘Reference’ category, are not to be issued. Documents marked as ‘Reference Copy’ are to be consulted within the library premises.
  • Reference books, Journals/Magazines, Standards/Patents, etc. are issued only to ‘Faculty and Equivalent Staff Members’ as per details below:

Material that Cannot be Borrowed

  • General Reference Sources, such as Dictionaries/Encyclopedias/ Directories/Maps/Atlases/Digests etc.
  • Special Collections, such as rare books, Master Theses and CD-ROM databases.
  • Theses/Dissertations/Manuscript/Standards/Patents/Journals/Periodicals are not lent out of the library.
  • Reserved Books, Newspapers and Technical reports will not be issued out of the library to anybody.


Book Renewal/Reservation Rules

  • Users can renew the books borrowed by them if the same books are not claimed by any other user. Book can be renewed either by bringing them to the Library Circulation Counter or Online (without bringing back to the library).
  • For Students, Books will be reissued/renewed one time only for another term of 15 days if there are no claims.
  • Users can get the book(s) reissued on or before the due date by intimating the Library. Overdue books will not be reissued.
  • For Faculty and staff members, the renewal facility for the same Accession number is not available.
  • Issued book may be recalled anytime before the due date if there is genuine urgent requirement by another member.
  • Members can reserve the documents they desire to borrow Online or Offline with the help of Library staff at circulation counter. Intimation about the availability of the document(s) will be given to the members when they are available for issue. The reservation will be strictly on first-come- first-served basis.
  • One reader can put maximum 1 claim only.
  • Claimed books are kept reserved for the claimant for 02 days from the date of return by previous borrower.


Fines & Penalties

  • Overdue Fine Rules
  • The book(s) shall be returned on or before due date otherwise Late fee/fine will be charged from all the borrowers’ @Rs. 1 per day per book. 
  • The Books circulation facility of a user will be suspended if a user has books overdue on their account for more than 15 days.
  • Books issued from the Reference Collection to Faculty members: Fine @Rs. 5 per day.
  • CDs/DVDs issued to Users: Fine @ Rs. 5 per day.
  • Loss/damage of Library RFID Card
  • For the loss/damage of RFID Card, a fine of Rs. 200/- each will be charged. In case, a student/staff member lost the RFID card then he/she has to submit a copy of FIR along with application for the New RFID card.
  • Loss/damage/Mutilation of Library Books
  • No book(s) in damaged condition will be accepted from the users on return. Mutilated or damaged book(s) will have to be replaced by the borrower.
  • The user should check the books thoroughly for missing pages, chapters etc. While getting them issued. Before issuing a document user should bring to the notice of the library staff mutilations if any. The staff shall make an official record of such observations before checking out the document. No complaint will be entertained later on.
  • The Lost/mutilated/spoiled book should be brought to the notice of library staff immediately. If a book is lost or mutilated beyond usable condition, then the borrower has to replace the lost/damaged book (s) within a month by a new copy with the same or latest edition of that book along with processing fee of Rs. 100/- (for each lost book) with late fine, if any.
  • Late fees, if any, will be charged till the loss of book is reported. If the original library book is returned after reporting it lost, the fine will be calculated till the date of its return.
  • In case of loss/damage/mutilation of a single volume/copy of a multi-volume set or series, the borrower is liable to replace the whole set with the same or latest Edition in case the single volume/copy of the set or series cannot be purchased.
  • If the book is out of print/out of stock and untraceable in the market or cannot be procured online, then the user has to pay the cost of the book as per the details below:

(Note: If the cost of the book is in foreign currency, then the Conversion rates as per latest GOC circular prevailing on the date of Payment of Fine).

Total Penalty Amount will be calculated as:
Total Penalty= Cost of Book (as per the case) + Processing Fees (Rs. 100/- on each Book) + Overdue Amount (Late Fine).

    • Refunding compensation money may not be possible if book lost is found later.
    • Replacement by photocopied version will not be accepted.
    • If the book is not returned/ replaced within a month then all the library facilities will be withdrawn for the current and next semester and the matter will be reported to competent authority for further action.
    • Loss/damage of Other Material of the Library
    • Library materials are to be handled with care.
    • The theft or misuse of Library resources will be viewed very seriously.
    • Each case will be examined to ascertain its genuineness and the matter will be reported to the competent authority for the disciplinary action.

 

Library Policy for the Distribution of Lanyards (with fish hook) and ID Card Holder:

a. All the regular library members will be provided Lanyards and ID Card Holder at the time of issue of the Library RFID Card initially without any payment basis.
b. The Contractual faculty members will also be provided Lanyards and ID Card Holder at the time of issue of the Library RFID Card initially without any payment basis but they have to return the Lanyards and ID Card Holder to the Library while taking ‘No Dues’ after their contract period is over.
c. The Library is not responsible for any loss or damage of the issued Lanyard and ID Card Holder.
d. If any member (i.e. student or staff member) misplace/lost or damage the Lanyard and ID Card Holder then he/she has to pay the amount of Rs.50/- each (i.e. Rs.100/- for both) along with an application to get the new Lanyard and ID Card Holder from the Library.
